News :: Wingnut Records

At this time when we have seen some crushing blows decimate the record shop industry, it really is wonderful to hear of a new store that caters expressly for the needs of Irish music fans. Please welcome Wingnut Records at the Bell Book and Candle in Galway.

I spoke to Ray about how he came around to setting up the store ::

At the end of last summer I was hangin’ up gig posters in The Bell, Book and Candle in Galway. It is a second hand book shop, but you can also buy weird stuff like, old video/hi8/super-8 cameras or comic books and second hand CDs and vinyls.
So Paul the owner and I were chatting about how Road Records was closing in Dublin, and how Plugd was temporarily closed in Cork. We were both naturally concerned about the availability of our favourite music, and the total lack of outlets for musicians and labels to stock their hardware.
Paul said that he had shelf space and ‘would love to take a hacksaw’ to his CD shelves, because nobody was buying music. I said that if I could source the music directly from labels and individuals (RMG refused to distribute to us, too small an operation they said, fair enough!) then we would see how we go.
I contacted Albert from Plugd and he was really helpful and very enthusiastic, put me on to all the labels and collectives and one independent distributor. Met with them all, all were well up for it, and booyah! we were up and running. Fierce craic altogether!

Sounds the stuff of sweet musical dreams, doesn’t it? As a place that devotes its shelfspace to presenting the great stuff on offer from indie labels and bands, by rights it should be a haven for the great scene we’ve heard about in the West. Apparently there’s a fabulous, thriving knot of hardcore bands, great upbeat popsters and of course, the prolific electronica ground from which we’ve heard some of the best new music emanating our way. Really cannot wish enough luck in this very brave venture – it’s definitely the kind of store that should draw in happy customers far and wide.
Well you know what you’ve gotta do – if you’re local to Galway, get in there and scoop up all those great albums. Hell, buy some books too, they’re good for you.

(And pssst! Bands! Remember if you drop in your own music to sell…it’s only fair and right that you pick up some new tunes too from time to time…)

The Wingnut website is coming soon. For now, find friendly Ray on Facebook.
